Quick Tip for adding GPS info to your images

If you don’t have a GPS receiver for your camera or a handheld GPS, you can still record GPS information to add to your image.

Most cell phones can tag image with GPS information. If your phone (or iPad) has this feature, just remember to take a cell phone shot in each of your locations. Then import these pictures into Lightroom.

The easiest way to make this work is to make sure that your camera and your phone will be set to the same time. Most phones do this automatically, but you’ll need to set this in your camera.

Once you have all your cell phone images and DSLR images in Lightroom, make sure you’re in the Library Module, select the folders containing all the trip images, and set the sort order to Capture Time. Your cell phone images should be right next to the images from the same locations. Make the cell phone image the “most selected” by clicking on it. Then select all the other images that were made at that same location. And click the Sync Metadata button. In the dialog box that pops up make sure that GPS is checked. That’s it.

What if you forget to change your camera’s time? You can fix this in Lightroom to. From the Library Module go to the Menu > Metadata > Edit Capture Time. You’ll be presented with several options for adjusting the camera time. You’ll probably just need to use the time zone adjustment.

  1. Great tip! I’ve been doing the first part – taking a cell phone snap to go along with the DSLR photo just as a reference – but didn’t think to sync metadata in Lightroom.
