News from Rod Barbee Photography
June 2024

Greetings,

In case you were missing it, and I hope you were, there was actually no May newsletter! I try to put out a newsletter each month but sometimes life just gets in the way (like with the need to build a new fence separating our property from the property we just sold), which is why the June newsletter isn’t appearing until now, the middle of June.

And this newsletter is going to be short. Because…life.

Olympic National Park

In May and early June, I led two photo trips to Olympic National Park. Both trips were great. On the second trip we even managed to get rained on in the Hoh rain forest! No real surprise there, but it's always nice to be there when it's drizzling and the greens are saturated and the mood is misty.

One of my favorite spots is the Ancient Groves Trail (above and below). This is a wonderful, short loop trail through an old growth forest that's more open than the Hoh, making the photography easier and with less undergrowth to complicate things. And the trail itself is very photogenic.

We also visited beaches, waterfalls and more. Below is Rialto Beach from the north side of the stream (looking south to La Push).

And one with backpackers crossing the stream.

I'll be returning next spring. If you want to join me, drop me a line and I'll add you to the early notify list.

Arranging your Photoshop workspace

Do you work in Photoshop? You know those panels and your tool bar? Ever want to rearrange those or add items? It can be complicated, and you need to remember a few things, like what to look for to dock a panel where you want it to be.

Or perhaps you have a need for multiple workspaces so you can switch to what works best for the task at hand. Maybe you edit your photos and you want one workspace for that, but if you’re designing a poster you want another.

I’ve mentioned Dave Kelly and his excellent video tutorials (especially his videos on using the TK luminosity mask panels) before. He recently made a video on creating and arranging Photoshop workspaces and it’s the best explanation on this topic I’ve yet seen.

Check it out on his YouTube channel.

Faroe Islands in August of 2025?

I’m in the planning stages for an August 2025 tour to the Faroe Islands. Interested? Let me know and I’ll put you on the list to be notified. Dates will be sometime in the first couple of weeks of August. If you've expressed interest in this tour previously, you're already on the early notify list, but feel free to remind me!

Spaces remaining in August 31- September 7 aurora tour

I still have three spaces available in my Aug 31- September 7 aurora tour in Yellowknife. It’s been an excellent year for auroras (And no, I didn’t see that huge display a few weeks ago. I’d set an alarm to get up in the middle of the night and either slept through it or didn’t set the alarm correctly. Sad.)

Anyway, Yellowknife is a great place to see and photograph auroras without the need for freezing your fingers and toes. If you’re interested, take a look at the aurora tour page on my Workshops site.

Sitka Bubble Net Feeding in March 2025

I’ve set up next year’s Humpback whales bubble-net feeding tour for March 23-27. I’ll be posting the trip in a couple of weeks or so (after I return from my Palouse workshop). The tour will be limited to five or six and the price will be in the $3800 range (does not include food/lodging).

If interested, let me know by responding to this email and I’ll add you to the early notify list. I’ll be sending an email to that list before the trip is officially announced here in the newsletter.

If there’s enough interest, I may be able to hire another boat.
You can get an idea of what to expect here.

Oh, there are eagles too!

Still space available in Bosque/White Sands workshop

This workshop is designed to experience the best in wildlife and landscape photography. Bosque del Apache is famous for bird photography and White Sands is must-visit park for landscape photography.

This workshop, co-led with my good friend Cliff Zenor, is December 7-11 and we still have space available.

Gigapixel AI sale

Under the category of better late than never, Topaz Labs is currently running (through June 14) a sale on the newest version of Gigapixel AI. If you need to may big images out of small images, whether to make a giant print from a regular camera file or to make a decent size print from a low-resolution phone photo, then check out Gigapixel.

Sydney update

Well, Sydney the Labradoodle was being very, very cute while standing in the midst of some flowers in the yard. I had my phone with me and was about to take that picture when she decided to move to a much less photogenic area, albeit still in flowers.

I think she does this on purpose.

I also managed to catch her while she was zooming circles around me.

Keeping up with the circular zoomy made me dizzy.

And yesterday she finally lost her two very pointy and sharp baby upper canine teeth. She's growing up!

I guess this newsletter wasn't that short after all.
