News from Rod Barbee Photography
January 2024

Greetings,

Running a bit late this month. It's been a busy start of the year and I'm not sure where all the time has gone.

This month I've got workshop openings, some new filters to tempt your wallet, a reminder, and puppy news!

Sitka Bubble Net Feeding opening

I have a tentative opening in my Sitka Humpback whale bubble-net feeding tour coming up at the end of March.

Photographing this spectacle is the most exciting and awe-inspiring wildlife photography I’ve ever done. This trip initially filled very fast with folks who’ve been with me before to photograph the whales and wanted to do it again.

If you’re interested in the spot, let me know as soon as you can.

Full details here.

Olympic openings

I’ve had some cancellations and transfers for my Olympic National Park photo workshop in May, which means I have some openings. This workshop is limited to seven so at this late stage, it’s likely going to be a very small group. So if you’re looking for a small group workshop, this one is likely to be it.

Maven Filters Wave 2 Kickstarter

In case you missed the announcement email I sent last month, Maven Filters has begun its second Kickstarter campaign.

They've greatly expanded their line to include combo polarizer/nd filters, a linear polarizing filter, an infrared filter, additional ND filters, a Bahtinov Mask filter to aid in focusing on stars, and much more.

I love the Maven filters I received from last year’s Kickstarter, they are super easy to use, high quality, and magnetic. This makes swapping out filters a snap and I no longer have to deal with attempting to screw filters in using freezing fingers or trying to line up filter threads on some of my lenses that have, let’s just say, thread issues.

The new filters I’m especially excited about are the combo polarizer/nd filters. I’m also going to get the Infrared filter so I can delve into infrared photography without having to dedicate a camera body to it.

The new linear polarizer can be stacked on a circular polarizer to create a variable ND filter. So much good stuff.

You too can get in on the Kickstarter, but act fast, it ends on January 27 (or thereabouts).

The original set is not part of the new Kickstarter, but you can come close to emulating it with the new filters in the current Kickstarter. See this post to read Maven’s recommendations for those just beginning with these filters.

And if you want to get the original set (polarizer, three ND filters, splash guard, adapter, carrying case), click here (this one’s an affiliate link).

Palouse openings

I also have a few openings in my Palouse workshop coming up this June. It is also limited to seven, so no matter what, it’s a relatively small group.

The Palouse is one of those places that no matter how many times you visit, there's always something new to discover. In some sense, it's an old, familiar, comfortable place for me. In another sense, it's always different because of weather, crop plantings, turning down a road I've never been on.

One thing you can be sure of in the middle of June is that the sun comes up really, really early and goes down really, really late.
But it's a "good" kind of tired.....

More about this trip on my Workshops site.

Change your copyright dates

In case you haven’t done it already, be sure to change the copyright dates in any metadata presets you use in your image file management software as well as in your camera.

I may not be very good and making and keeping New Year's resolutions, but I somehow always remember to do this.

Puppy time approaching

It’s getting closer to puppy time. She’s been born and we’re anticipating picking her up in early March. Hopefully, I’ll have some pictures to share next month.

We've settled on a name, but will wait until we actually meet her to make sure it fits her.

She should end up being about the same size as our beloved Bailey with some of the same coloring. We're really looking forward to expanding our family again and cuddling some ears.

Bosque and White Sands

I'm hoping that by next month I'll be ready to open the Bosque del Apache/White Sands National Park workshop that Cliff Zenor and I have planned. Stay tuned.

And, as always, if you're interested in an early notification, just let me know by responding to this email.

2023 Favorites

I put together a short slideshow of some of my favorite images from 2023. Take a peak.

That's it for now. Hopefully I'll be a little more on the ball next month. And maybe I'll even have some puppy pics!
