News from Rod Barbee Photography
July 2023

Greetings,

This will be short (as well as being late!). I've been super busy getting ready to paint our house as well as working on other home projects.

My June Palouse workshop was great. As has been usual the past few years, canola was all over the place. I don't know how long this trend will last, but I certainly like it!

Palouse workshop report

It was another good year in the Palouse. As usual, my scouting led me to new spots to try as did a tip or two from my friend John Barclay.

Canola is abundant; the market is good for canola so a lot of it is being planted and it’s easy to find. Not like in the past when my first stop was always to the top of Steptoe Butte where I’d pull out the binoculars and start searching for canola. Once I spotted some, I’d take a bearing with my compass and transfer that to a map to try to determine which road(s) to explore.
You can see a few of my new Palouse images in my Latest Work gallery.

Olympic National Park 2024 workshop

I've tentatively planned my 2024 spring Olympic National Park workshop for May 12-17. I'm just waiting on the hotel to confirm those dates and I'll be posting it for registration.

Just like my 2024 Palouse workshop mentioned above, if you're interested, reply to this email to get on the early notify/early bird discount list.

Still one space remaining in Auroras tour

There's still one space remaining in my Sept. 18-25 aurora tour in Yellowknife, NWT, Canada.

The auroras are the most addicting natural phenomenon I've encountered. I can't get enough of them. And Yellowknife in September is a great place and time to see them. The lights show up, on average, every two out of three nights. And from my experience, that's true. If you go to Yellowknife, you'll see auroras.

We'll have six nights to try to capture the show and it doesn't take long to get the hang of aurora photography so you're sure to come away with some stunning shots.

If you can't make it this year, next year's trip(s) will be earlier in September, probably in the first two weeks. If interested, let me know and I'll put you on the notify list.

Back to work

Back to my projects. I need to start masking and then priming soon, probably this weekend. And I still have probably another cord or so of wood to move and stack. And... (whine, whine, whine)

I'll be heading to Sitka in just couple of weeks to photograph whales, birds, bears (maybe), fishing boats and more. Oh, and to escape the summer heat of the lower 48.

I still have on space available in the August 4-9th tour and it's not too late to sign up!

Hope you all are able to stay cool, comfortable, and safe this summer. It's turning into a doozy, and I don't mean that in a good way. Be careful out there!
