News from Rod Barbee Photography
May 2023

Greetings,

Is anybody out there a hockey fan? I ask because Seattle's new (2nd season) NHL team is actually in the Stanley Cup playoffs!

I wasn't previously a hockey fan. I might watch part of a game if it was on, but I really didn't care.

But my son is a huge hockey fan and my grandson plays hockey so I got drawn into it simply by going to a few of my grandson's games. It was fun.

And now that the Seattle Kraken (cool name and even cooler logo) are in the playoffs, I've been watching. And getting hooked.

And this has been sports talk!

An opening for Yellowknife

A space just opened up in my Sept. 18-25 Yellowknife aurora tour. The auroras have been going crazy this year, even making impressive appearances in the lower 48. If you’re interested, drop me a line to make sure the space is still open.
You can check out the tour here.

Upcoming trips

There’s still room and still time to join me in the Palouse.
We are getting very close to the hotel's cutoff date, so if you think you might want to join us, let me know and I can at least give you the hotel info.

Find the details of the workshop here.

And I still have two spaces remaining for my August 4-9 Sitka tour. We'll see plenty of whales along with fishing boats, seals, otters, puffins and other sea birds, eagles, and maybe some bears along the coast!
Add to that harbor, travel, and landscape photography, plus the very nice little town of Sitka, and you'll find plenty.
And while it's broiling in the lower 48 in early August, Sitka is usually mild and much cooler; a pleasant escape from the heat.

One project down, an unknown number yet to go

We had our wood stove installed!

I was able to get the hearth pad made in time and now we have a stove. We even had a few days cold enough to make firing it up worth it.
Next on the agenda is a siding project that also includes re-doing the wall where our old propane fireplace used to be. We hired a contractor for this. It should be starting soon. Our living room has been in “construction zone” mode for the last few weeks, hence the weird looking photo of the wood stove with co-axial cable going behind it.

All will be done….soon?

Later in the year

All three of the workshops that I’m co-leading with Cliff Zenor have room.

First up, Colorado Mountains Fall Color. Mountain landscapes and brilliant color. We’ll be base out of Ouray, CO, Oct. 1-6.

Next is Bosque del Apache NWR November 29- December 3. If you want to photograph birds, this is the place. Sandhill cranes and snow geese are the main targets but there are others. And the sunrises and sunsets can be stunning.

Finally, there’s White Sands National Park, December 5-9. White Sands is a beautiful, graphic, and subtle landscape. Cold mornings and beautiful light. Think pastels and curves with a sharp Yucca offering texture and color contrast.

Off to Olympic

I'll soon be back in Olympic National Park for my annual workshop. Which means I'll finally have the chance to put those Maven filters to the test. I've been so busy with home projects (I may have mentioned those on the rare occasion) that I've not gotten out to do much in the way of photography.

I'm hoping to have some examples to show you next month.

Until then....Go Kraken!!
