Greetings,

A lot to unpack this month. Sort of making up for the skimpy newsletters lately. So you MUST READ IT ALL!

2023 Aurora tours open for registration

The dates are set, the hotel rooms reserved, and the Northern Lights await!
Registration is now open for my 2023 Aurora tours in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada.

The dates are:
September 10-17 and September 18-25. Both are limited to six participants.

What’s the difference between the two dates you may ask? As far as the aurora is concerned, not much. It will get dark slightly earlier during the second tour. And it may be a bit colder at night. But the auroras will be there. I’ve never been skunked on any tour, and we usually have at least four nights of seeing the lights.

The main difference between the two tours may be fall color. From experience, both weeks should show some good color. In some years, the color was past its prime by the third week in September. In other years, it was peaking. It’s pretty much a toss-up between the two weeks.

There are currently four spaces remaining in the first tour and two spaces in the second tour.

For more information and to sign up, visit my Aurora tours page.

PhotoPills tutorials

Confused by PhotoPills? Me too. I know how to use several features, like the hyperfocal Table and Spot Stars “Pills.” I use the planner to figure out moon location and phases, as well as planning possible Milky Way shoots. I can even use the Augmented Reality features to preview sun or Milky Way locations when scouting a location.

But planning a future shot where I want the moon or sun in a certain place at a certain time? That’s when my eyes glaze over.

Recently, I found out about Brenda Petrella and her Outdoor Photography School. Brenda has produced a ton of video tutorials on a wide range of topics. She has also produced what she calls her “PhotoPills Friday” video series.

I’ve been binging these tutorials and have learned a whole lot. They’re in easily digestible lengths, go straight to the point and are very well presented.

Want PhotoPills to finally make sense? Check out Brenda’s PhotoPills series. While you’re at it, take a listen to her podcast. It can all be found here.

If you don’t have PhotoPills and want to know more, visit the PhotoPills site.

Favorites from 2022

On my blog I've posted a few of my favorite images of 2022. Take a look!

More workshops in 2023

In addition to the aurora tours, I’ve a few more trips lined up.

There’s still room in both my Olympic National Park and Palouse workshops. I’ve lost track of the number of trips I’ve led to each of these locations. Olympic is practically my backyard and I never tire of the forests, streams, waterfalls, and beaches. More info here.

And there’s the Palouse. Every year I find something new. Or rediscover something forgotten. It’s another location I never tire of. More info here.

In early August I'm planning another tour or two to Sitka to photograph Humback whales, bald eagles, fishing boats, puffins, rainforests, harbors and more. As soon as I nail down the dates I'll be posting those. Let me know if you want to be notified when I do.

In late April and early May, Cliff Zenor and I will be leading a pair of workshops: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, April 25-29, and North Carolina Waterfalls, May 1-5.

October 1-6 we’ll be going to Ouray, CO for Fall Color.

And in late November and early December we’ll once again be heading to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge to photograph birds and White Sands National Park for the many shapes and textures to be found among the dunes. I’ll be posting those trips soon, but drop me a line if you want to be on the early notify list for these two workshops.
