News from Rod Barbee Photography
June 2022

Greetings,

It’s been quite a month. I got to go to my favorite park, Olympic National Park. And just a few days before that, my wife and I got to see my all-time favorite band, Sigur Rós (from Iceland) perform in Seattle’s Paramount Theatre. It was the first time I’ve been in any sort of theater in over two years. Everybody there was vaxxed and masked, per the requirements of the venue, which I greatly appreciated.

Olympic National Park

I’m just recently back from my May workshop in Olympic National Park with a small group of hardy souls willing to brave the rain.

A few days before the trip, the weather forecast was calling for rain nearly every day. But we only had to face any substantial rain on our first full day. And, appropriately, that was in the Hoh rain forest.

For the most part, when it did rain, it was light. Then it would quit. Then start again, lightly. Then quit again. It wasn’t until we were ready to leave the Hoh that the rain came back in earnest. So that worked out well.

The next day we got such a light sprinkling in the Quinault that it was hard to notice.

We had mixed luck with sunsets on the beaches, but they had their moments. And the rocks on Rialto Beach are always great fun to photograph.

By the time we got to Sol Duc Falls on the third day, the skies had cleared up and the morning rainbow over the falls appeared, which is always great to see.

You could tell that winter was reluctant to release its grip. Along the Sol Duc trail it seemed that the forest flowers and new leaves were late in coming out, and the ferns along the trail looked like they had been, until recently, a little smashed down from snow.

Our sunrise at Hurricane Ridge was also cloudless. I was hoping for a few clouds to hold the morning light, or at least some fog in the valleys. Next time!

Silver Falls and Bandon

I’ve scheduled and made hotel arrangements for a Silver Falls & Bandon photo tour, Oct. 24-28, 2022.

The plan is to meet on the evening of Monday the 24th in Salem (two nights in Salem) and to spend the next day and the following morning in Silver Falls State Park, just east of Salem, OR. This is enough time to photograph all the photogenic falls of the park as they’re all relatively quick and easy to get to.

On Wednesday we’ll move to Bandon for the last two nights where we’ll have two shots at a sunset on Bandon Beach (or elsewhere, you just never know…) as well as a couple of sunrises. We’ll also visit Shore Acres State Park at high tide during the early afternoon on Thursday in hopes of photographing massive crashing waves. So let’s hope for some storm surge too!

There are currently three spaces remaining. For more information and to sign up, visit my Silver Falls/Bandon page.

Producing Better Prints

Ever feel intimidated by printing at home or sending files to a lab for printing? Confused by calibrating or using printer profiles? Sean Bagshaw and Zack Schnepf have created a video course that addresses those issues and a whole lot more, like how to adjust your print files for best results when using specific printer profiles.

I don’t print a lot, but I’ve printed enough to think I knew what I was doing. Well, I learned a lot from this series.

And until May 31 (just a couple of days away), you can get course for 20% off of the already reasonable price of $49.

Click here for more information on this course. Like all of Sean’s courses, this one is just crammed with great information along with being very well presented. And purchase of the course also includes a coupon for 20% off of a print from HD Aluminum Prints. (I’ve had prints made by HD Aluminum and they are fantastic.)

I have no affiliation with Sean or Zack, I’ve purchased a number of Sean’s Photoshop and other courses and have learned a lot from each one of them. They are all well worth the cost.

Gigapixel AI on sale until June 2nd

Topaz Labs has just release Gigapixel AI 6.1 with Face Recovery AI for use on low resolution images.

I’ve not tested this new Face Recovery feature, that would mean I’d have to search for old people pictures. I mean old pictures of people. You know what I mean. But the demos on the Topaz site are remarkable.

If you've not heard of Gigapixel AI, it's an image resizing utility that does a fantastic job. If you need to greatly enlarge images for print, check out Gigapixel AI.

Through June 2nd, Gigapixel AI is $20 off. Click on this Affiliate Link! to learn more. And if you buy it, I get a small commission. Cool, right?

Workshop and tour openings

There is still space available in my Sept. 7-11 workshop in Newport, OR on the Oregon Coast.

And John Barclay and I have two spaces remaining in our Sept. 27 - Oct. 4 aurora tour in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada.
That's all for this month. I should have some new Palouse pictures to share in the next newsletter. Wish me luck!
Affiliate link. If you buy something I get a taste. It's a win-win!
