News from Rod Barbee Photography
February 2022

Greetings,

I've got some workshop updates below as well as an article of interest to you Windows users out there contemplating the update to Windows 11.

On with this month's newsletter!

Windows 11?

I've been thinking of updating my less-than-one-year-old Puget Systems PC to Windows 11 and was wondering if updating was a good idea or not. Since the folks at Puget Systems know a whole lot more than I do I thought I'd check with them.

I bought my computer mainly for better performance using Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. So after reading an article I found on the Puget Systems website all about Photoshop and Lightroom performance under Windows 11, I've made the decision to wait a bit longer before updating.
Basically, Puget System's testing shows that both Photoshop and Lightroom generally perform better under Windows10. I was specifically interested in the results for the AMD Ryzen 9 series of CPUs, which I have. The results show that both Photoshop and Lightroom Classic perform slightly better under Windows 10.

The article is a few months old at this point, but as I'm currently happy with how things are on my PC, I think I'll leave well enough alone unless I learn of some other compelling features of Windows 11 that would justify a slight performance loss in the two programs I use the most.

Here's the article in case you've been wondering the same things.

Oregon Coast: Newport open for registration

Cliff Zenor and I are going to the Oregon Coast! Next September 7-11 we’ll be conducting a workshop in Newport, OR, one of my very favorite locations along the coast.

Some of the attractions include the Yaquina Head and Heceta Head lighthouses (Heceta Head being one of the most photographed lighthouses on the Pacific Coast). We’ll also find great coastal scenics with crashing waves at Seal Rocks State Park and the Cape Perpetua area.
We’ll photograph a working harbor in both early and late light along with the graphic shapes found in stacks of crab pots and piles of rope and other fishing equipment. We’ll also visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium, among other locations.

For more information and to sign up, visit my Newport page.

Small group, Olympic National Park in May

My May workshop to Olympic National Park is limited to just six participants and there’s still room for you!

May is just about my favorite time in the park. It’s much less crowded than in the summer and the greens are lush and the streams and waterfalls look their best. And the coast…well, the coast is good any time of the year. And there will still be lots of snow on the mountains!

For more information, and to sign up, visit my Olympic National Park May workshop page.

Palouse

There is also still space in the Palouse workshop, June 14-19.
Every time I visit, I come away with a new favorite picture and I always seem to find something new to photograph.
If you've been wanting to visit the Palouse, this is great time for it!

One space open in Sitka: Whales and more tour, August 9-14

Whales. Fishing boats. Eagles. Seals. Sea Lions. Puffins. Streams and waterfalls. Awesome views. Harbors. That’s what’s in store in Sitka. And I have one spot left in the August 9-14 tour.

Visit my Sitka page for more info.

Any interest in Bosque and/or White Sands this fall/winter?

Cliff Zenor and I had such a great time (and captured a lot of great images) last December in Bosque del Apache and White Sands that we’re wondering if there would be any interest in joining us again this year for a similar adventure in either or both of these locations.

Bosque is mainly a wildlife trip, though you can make some wonderful wildlife landscape images.

White Sands is a study in graphic composition. Everywhere you look are curves and lines and shapes. And both locations have high potential for incredible sunrise and sunset colors.

Let me know if you're interested in either of these trips or maybe even a combo trip, and I’ll add you to the early notify list.

Auroras

John Barclay and I still have room in our second aurora tour this September 27 - Oct. 4 (the first tour is sold out). We've not been able to go to Yellowknife for the past two years so we're really anxious to see those lights again.

Other than the last two years, I've been going to Yellowknife in the fall for auroras since 2014 and I've yet to be disappointed.
Not only will we see auroras at night, during the day there will be fall color, waterfalls, lakes and other landscape possibilities. And there's always the chance of seeing some wildlife.

But those lights...You will find them addicting.

You can get more details on our Aurora Tours page.

Other updates

The new dog conversation continues. We're inching ever so closer. Everyday we look at all those cute dogs on Instagram brings us one day closer to possibly kidnapping, errr, adopting one. We're aiming for another "doodle" breed. They're just so soft and cuddly and loving and playful and cute.  And non-shedding.

The small remodel project I mentioned last month is done. With another small one on the way. As some of you know, these things never really end.

And it's getting closer and closer to the first lawn mowing of the year. The grass is growing but it's constantly wet. So once it dries out, it's me and the lawnmower, together again!

Take care everyone.
