Greetings,
Ok, so this is really, really late. I have mostly non-lame excuses. Mostly.

Workshop updates

This feels like a tentative year. Some workshops are going to happen, at least one has been cancelled, and some others are in limbo. Still others are incubating; I may add to my fall schedule soon with possible trips to Silver Falls State Park in Oregon and the Palouse in the fall.
I’ve had to cancel this year’s spring/summer Palouse workshop. The workshop for 2022 has not been scheduled yet but it will likely be around the second or third full week of June. Reply to this email if you’d like to be notified when the 2022 workshop is open to registration.
I’ve had one opening in my Sitka Whales and More photo tour (August 2-7). This trip is limited to four participants.
And the first of the two Yellowknife aurora tours has one opening.
The Bosque del Apache and White Sands workshops with Cliff Zenor scheduled toward the end of the year are currently wide open and we're assuming that they will be able to happen.
For more details on all of these, visit my Workshops website.

Backlight 4 imminent release

The Turning Gate (TTG) is about to release version 4 of its Backlight website creation software. There are some significant new features for both the front end and the back end. I particularly like the metadata panel that can appear for the large images in a gallery. It’s configurable with up to eight fields that can each contain all sorts of metadata like captions and keywords, camera, exposure info, lens used, focal length, ISO, date taken, rating, etc.
Learn more from this TTG Backlight 4 First Look blog post.

Just for fun

I was browsing through my image catalog in Lightroom when I came across this picture that I had nearly forgotten about.
Years ago, my friend Don Mammoser and I led trips out of Ouray, CO to photograph the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. This is a black and white conversion of an HDR image I made from inside one of the buildings of the Animus Forks ghost town. The view is looking through the window, though it certainly looks like a framed picture on the wall, doesn't it?
Speaking of my friend Don, he's got a new YouTube channel full of photo tips, equipment features, site guides and more. Take a look.

What I’ve been up to
…and the reason this is so late.
Long time readers know that I know just how important it is to you that you read about my home projects. Some of you have even written to tell me that you actually live to read about my projects and that those stories are the highlight of your day (this statement has not been evaluated for veracity).
This past month or so I’ve stripped, cleaned, and re-stained our decks. You may remember that last summer I planned to replace a bunch of the deck boards. Well, that happened.
In addition to the decks, I’ve had more fence posts to repair or replace, which involved breaking up and removing a Herculean amount of concrete, attesting to my strength and stamina (this statement has not been evaluated for veracity), a lawn to reseed and I’m sure there was more. My muscles feel like there’s been more. And I still have part of fence to stain.
What I haven’t been doing is getting out to photograph. I’m hoping to remedy that soon. Like before my first workshop soon. I did photograph some tulips Tracy has in a container in the yard. Just so I know my camera still works!
So does my iPhone camera. Look at what just popped up in the yard!
Other than that, I've received my first Moderna vaccine and get the second one a week from today. So yay for me!!
And that’s all I really have this month.
Take care and stay safe everyone.
