News from Rod Barbee Photography
May 2020

Greetings,

This newsletter will be short. You'd figure that I'd have plenty of time to write a nice fat, juicy newsletter, but life in the past few weeks has gotten more complicated, and not just because of the current Covid-19 situation.
Perhaps more on that in a future newsletter.

Backlight 3

The Turning Gate (TTG) has released Backlight 3. Don’t know what that is? Longtime readers will know that I’ve been using The Turning Gate’s web site creation tools for a long time. I think it’s been nearly eight years.

They started out as Web Module plug-ins for Lightroom. At one time, nearly my entire site was created from within Lightroom!

The plug-ins evolved into Backlight. Backlight is an online web site creation platform for creating pages, image albums, and more. And you no longer need to be a Lightroom using to take advantage of these great tools.

Everything on my site, except my Newsletter archive pages, are created using Backlight or in WordPress using a WordPress theme created by Backlight.

If you are using Lightroom, your entire photo workflow, from capture to web publishing can be done from within Lightroom using the TTG Lightroom Publisher plug-in. That’s what I do

But if your workflow centers around other products like On1 or Capture One or Luminar, you can still take advantage of everything Backlight offers except for directly publishing from your image management program, like you can with Lightroom.

Instead, your workflow would require a couple extra steps: export from your image management/editing program at the needed image size, and upload those images using the Backlight Publisher upload tool.
And with the improvements in Backlight 3, incorporating other image management tools besides Lightroom is becoming closer to a reality.

If you’re a photographer who wants total control over your site (no ads popping up) and you don’t mind doing a little bit of design work in Backlight’s robust design module, then give Backlight a look over.
If you decide to go that route there’s a bonus just because you know me. I’m a beta tester and a forum moderator; I’ve been using these tools for years. So you’ve go some built in tech-support if you have any questions.

I also run a website full of tricks and tips and customizations. You can find that here.
And if you need more help than a quick question or two can’t answer, I also offer consulting services.
For more on Backlight 3, take a look at the Backlight 3 site.

For gallery examples, the support forum and more in general info, visit The Turning Gate main site.

(I have no financial affiliation with The Turning Gate. As a tester I do get access to all the software at no cost)

Remaining Optimistic

Even amid the current uncertainty, I'm trying to keep as many workshops and tours on the schedule as possible.

I still have openings for Sitka in August as well as Zion in the Fall. I've also rescheduled the Bandon workshop to October. (the locals tell me that sunsets are best in October)

John Barclay and I have, I believe, one or two openings in our July Olympic National Park workshop. Still hoping it can happen. I really want to try those Milky Way shots from Ruby Beach that I've got planned for the group.

Visit my workshops site for updates and availability

52 Weeks

As I write this, it's been 52 weeks to the day that we had to let our little Bailey go. We miss her every day and will forever get a laugh remembering her antics over the years.

I'm sure another dog is in our future, but right now, it's still too soon.

I hope you and your families (including the furry family members) are all doing well.

Stay safe.
