News from Rod Barbee Photography
April 2020

Greetings,

Well. What a difference a month makes. A month ago, I had just returned from Death Valley. Flying on one of those infested death tubes, no less!
And now? Now I don’t know if I’ll be going anywhere for the rest of the year.
But I choose to be optimistic and have left my workshop and tour schedule intact, though things may change.

My wife and I and our families are all healthy and I hope you and yours all are doing well too and keeping your distance.

Tulips in the rainAnd keeping busy.
I admit it’s a little hard these days to get motivated, but I’m trying. I’ve been working on some new presentation material and teaching demos. Well, planning to work on. Even thinking of trying my hand at creating some short instructional videos. And no, there’s no chance of me becoming a YouTube star any time in the near future.

Hey, at least the NFL has made NFL Game Pass free through the end of May! Now I can relive some Seahawks glory...

Zion

Temple of the Virgin
First off in this month's newsletter, I’ve added an autumn Zion photo tour to my schedule. I’ll be co-leading this one with Cliff Zenor.
The tour is October 28 – November 1 and will be based out of Springdale, UT.
Zion is probably my favorite fall color destination. It’s also my favorite of the Utah national parks.

Autumn is a great time in the park. Sunrise and sunset times are reasonable, the temperature is near perfect (for me, anyway) and the colors are captivating.

These days we all need something to look forward to and fall in Zion is a great thing to look forward to! Hope you can join us. For more information, visit my Zion page.

Changes to upcoming workshops

Seeing as how workshop registrations have dropped off, I’ve changed the maximum participant numbers for Olympic, Bandon, and Palouse to six. This keeps them below the recommended maximum numbers for social gatherings. It also means that Cliff won’t be co-leading the Bandon and Palouse trips. And that’s too bad since we had such a wonderful time in Death Valley.

This assumes that state governments in Washington and Oregon deem it safe to allow hotels to remain open. We’re all just in a wait and see mode.

I have made contingency arrangements, however, to postpone the Bandon trip until October if needed. October is rumored to be the best time for sunsets. It’s also a good time for…interesting…weather.

Olympic in July

As we wait to see what happens, John Barclay and I are still planning for our July Olympic photo workshop. I believe that there is spot available for this workshop. If interested, email John and let him know.

I really hope this trip happens. It’s longer than my usual Olympic workshop, which means we’ll be able to visit locations like Deer Park and its spectacular view. We’ll also have three sunsets on the coast. And since it the time of the new moon, we’ll also have the chance for some Milky Way photography after a sunset! More info here.

Sitka

There is still space in my August 3-8 Sitka photo tour. This trip is whale-centric. We’ll be taking at least three trips out on Sitka Sound to photograph Humpback whales. Along the way we’ll see and photograph sea otters, seals, sea lions and sea birds. There’s also a chance of seeing other species of whiles like Grey whales and Minki whales. Plus there are always fishing boats to photograph.

On land we’ll visit harbors, old growth forest, Totem Park, historic downtown Sitka, and the spectacular views from Harbor Mountain.

Out of Chicago on-line conference

Poppies amongst lavender
You may recall that last October I was one of the instructors at the Out of Chicago photo conference in Newport, Oregon. I was super impressed by the planning and the way it was run. Not to mention the talent pool of fantastic instructors. It’s really a first-rate organization.

And I’m even more impressed with what they’ve done now.

On April 24-26, Out of Chicago is presenting Out of Chicago Live! An online global photography conference.
In an amazingly short time, they’ve managed to put together this event, which includes over 100 presentations by over 60 instructors. And though I’m not presenting, I feel safe in recommending it.

So if you’re going nuts self-quarantining and you’re needing a photo workshop fix, this may just be the thing.

Give it a look over at the Out of Chicago site.

Lastly

That's it for this month. Stay safe, stay at home (if you can) and never stop washing your hands.

Here's an example of one of my recent projects: a new compost bin!
