News from Rod Barbee Photography
February 2020

Greetings,

Hope the winter is treating everybody well.
Getting caught up on last year's images? That's what I've been trying to do. I should probably get that done before I start adding pictures for 2020!

Topaz DeNoise AI 2.0 discount

Sorry about the late notice on this deal, but there's still time to jump on it.

DeNoise AI by Topaz Labs has been my favorite noise reduction tool since I began using it last year. They’ve just released version 2 and it has batch processing! A big time saver if you’re de-noising a lot of similar images (think of a night/aurora time lapse sequence).

In addition to noise reduction, DeNoise also contains AI Clear, which is basically a capture sharpening utility that does a spectacular job.

The image above the original on the left and a preview on the right. It's from an image shot at 8000 ISO. Click on the image to be taken to a large version.

And right now, until Feb. 7, you can get DeNoise AI 2.0 for $20 off.

It’s really worth your time to at least take this utility out for a spin.
Check it out here.

I have no affiliation with Topaz Labs, I’m just really impressed by their tools.

Sitka Whales

There are still two open spaces in my August 3-8 tour in Sitka, AK. We’ll be taking at least three trips on Sitka Sound to photograph Humpback whales, sea otters, seals, birds, fishing boats and more.

And on land we’ll be visiting harbors, rainforests, Totem Park, a spectacular view from atop Harbor Mountain, salmon in Indian Creek and, very possibly, raptors (still working on this so no promises).

This tour is timed for the salmon run and the possibility of seeing and photographing whales. I’ve been out on Sitka Sound in August several times and we’ve never failed to see plenty of whales, otters, birds, and much more.

Oh, and there’s the town of Sitka too! A wonderful place to just walk about and be a tourist.

And there are still two spaces remaining. Find out more here.

Olympic in May

May is one of the best times to photograph the rainforests, streams and waterfalls in Olympic. Everything is green and the streams and falls look great. And there’s a chance of seeing elk in the Hoh area.

Add to that the classic Olympic beaches. Hard to beat. And there are three spaces still available!

Visit my Olympic in May workshop page for more.

Bandon in May

And right after Olympic, I’ll be in Bandon with Cliff Zenor. Bandon arguably has the best set of sea stacks on the Oregon Coast. And they’re right outside your hotel room door. Actually, across the street and down some stairs. What could be more convenient?

In addition to Bandon beach, we’ll be checking out three lighthouses, Shore Acres State Park with its formal English garden and sandstone cliff shoreline, a small but very photogenic harbor and more.

Find out more about this trip on my workshops site.

And if you want to combine the May Olympic National Park workshop and Bandon, I’ve got a discount in mind. Contact me for more info on that.

Palouse in June

Despite the great light, amazing graphics, old trucks and structures and new discoveries every year, I still enjoy photographing the Palouse. It’s a burden. But I bear it.

If you’d like to come along and help me bear that burden, there is still room in the workshop I’m leading this June with my friend (and awesome workshop leader) Cliff Zenor.

We’ll get up early, stay out late and generally party all day long. Wait, no, that was 40 years ago….

We will be up early and often stay out late, but we’ll take it easy on you in the middle of the day. No forced marches, just time to go through your images, have some image critiques and classroom time, and perhaps take a nap.
Interested? Well take a look at my Palouse page for more details.

Parting words

That's it for this month. Seriously, check out DeNoise AI by Topaz. It really works well.

I'll be heading to Death Valley soon and hoping I'll end up decent images to share with you in the March newsletter.
